(a) the present size of the Indian Armed Forces;

(b) whether Government is planning to increase the sanctioned strength of the Armed Forces in view of threat from neighbouring countries, if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(c) the details of expected expenditure of such an exercise?

STATEMENT IN RESPECT OF PARTS (a) TO (c) OF RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.667 FOR 11.12.2013 REGARDING INCREASING THE STRENGTH OF ARMED FORCES.

(a)  The present strength of the Indian Armed Forces is as under:

(b) & (c):  Force accretion of the Armed Forces is an ongoing process dictated primarily by capabilities to be achieved, threat perceptions, prevailing external strategic security environment and emerging technologies.  The force accretion programme is being pursued in accordance with the Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan and the 12th Defence Plan (2012-2017).
